Sports Illustrated Features Transgender Musician As Cover Model Despite Twitter Backlash

Sports Illustrated recently released its cover models on Twitter, including transgender singer/songwriter Kim Petras, sparking Twitter outrage, SI defends the decision.

Post

Sports Illustrated recently announced their latest cover models on their Twitter account, @SI_Swimsuit. Among them was transgender Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Kim Petras, who took a lion's share of the attention away from the biological female cover models.

Most of the attention was not welcoming or friendly. Many users questioned why Sports Illustrated used Petras as a cover model when biological women fought hard for equality and additional rights, only to have them replaced by biological males.

This decision came with another eye-opener. Sports Illustrated also announced that ex-convict Martha Stewart will be part of the latest batch of cover models.

The Twitter post featuring Petras has taken a large majority of the attention away from the other models. To put it into perspective, the previous Twitter post announcing Angel Reese, a biological female, garnered only nine comments. The Twitter post following Petras, featuring biological female Brooks Nader, garnered five comments.

The Twitter post featuring Petras garnered 3,773 comments - a large majority of them critical of SI's decision.

One user @wademiller_usmc commented: "A man dressed as a woman? Hard pass. I'll go to @outkick for non-woke sports news." Outkick is an alternative sports media Twitter page with the tagline, "Your antidote to the mainstream sports media."

@HduntonBrooks wrote: "Oh look it's Sports Illustrated canceling women... guess they think MEN can replace us."

@happy_foxxy wrote: "Why would you put a man on the cover of a swimsuit magazine? Are you trying to beat @budlight in tanking sales?"

Sports Illustrated Defends Decision

SI Editor-in-Chief MJ Day responded to the criticism and in a statement called Petras a "beacon of inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ community." For any readers unaware, the IA in LGBTQIA+ stands for Intersex and Asexual.

“There is no theme [to this year’s issue]—rather, there is a vision, a sentiment, a hope that women can live in a world where they feel no limitations, internally or externally,” said Day. “But the absence of a theme is not to say that [these women] don’t share certain common traits. They’re constantly evolving.”

But in a detailed and powerful Twitter user message, @KiraR, a mother of four children, wrote: “Listen, if you are an adult and want to identify as a different gender, be my guest, but the recent trend for companies and sports to feature and give the top awards/spots to trans women instead of biological women is more than concerning. Why are biological women being replaced in these spaces by biological men once again? And where are all the feminists who championed this cause for decades? This is a targeted agenda, and it ends when we say it ends.”

If you are conservative and this story resonates with you but you want to stay a sports fan, consider using Outkick.com. Outkick is an alternative to all things sports and covers major national news stories without an element of "wokeness". Sports Illustrated has long since been considered one of the main sports news media outlets but has clearly gone woke.
