Popular New Movie, Super Mario Bros. Considered Non-Woke

Many major movie companies such as Disney are widely viewed as woke companies that instill the ideology within their movies. However, the latest blockbuster Super Mario Bros is not considered one of them. What do you think?

Hollywood, CA: It has been long understood that some movie companies have been leaning towards a woke ideology. This can be seen in many movie productions, sometimes overtly, other times discreetly - but clearly rooted in "wokeness." 

Disney appears to be one of the leading companies when it comes to involving woke ideology into their productions. But their decision to 'go woke' is becoming increasingly riskier as two of their recent releases have seen massive losses.

In 2022, Disney's movie Strange World reported a loss of nearly $200 million. According to George Simpson of Express Entertainment, he wrote, "The $180 million movie follows a family of explorers traversing an uncharted land with their disabled dog. Upon its release, the film was accused of trying to educate children about sexual preferences through Jaboukie Young-White's gay main character and his teen romance."

Another flop Disney experienced last year came from Pixar's Lightyear. Although their losses were nowhere near the staggering losses of Strange World, Lightyear only grossed $226 million. The number is widely considered a major Pixar flop as the movie cost $200 million to produce, included a cast of major A-list celebrities and started with a long history of popularity from the Toy Story brand in general. 

Critics of both Strange World and Lightyear attribute their dismal performance to being too "woke" and subsequently led to "go woke, go broke."

Super Mario Bros.

Mario is the main character and protagonist of the Super Mario Bros. video game series developed by Nintendo. He is a short, stocky Italian plumber who wears a red cap and shirt, blue overalls, and brown shoes. Mario is known for his bravery, agility, and ability to jump and run with exceptional speed and precision. Along with his younger brother Luigi, Mario has become one of the most iconic characters in the history of video games, and has appeared in numerous games, spin-offs, and merchandise.

There was original skepticism for the movie prior to its release. The 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie was not well-received by critics or audiences at the time of its release, and it has since become known as a critical and commercial flop. The film deviated significantly from the storyline and style of the Super Mario Bros. video games, and many fans felt that it failed to capture the spirit of the source material. 

However, the numbers currently tell a more lucrative story. Since the release of the movie, it has grossed nearly $630 million and broke box office records for the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated film and the highest-grossing film based on a video game.

It is believed by many that the success is correlated to a mainstream view of the movie being "anti-woke". The film is praised by many to be an unbiased and wholesome family-oriented movie. Although there are critics who challenge that theory. But one thing is for certain, it does not appear to be clearly woke like Disney does. And it is feedback, views and opinions like these that will determine where the woke meter will be for Disney and where it will be for Universal Studios on our platform.
